416. Field-day

분야나 들판을 가리키는 field가 day와 결합하면 '매우 즐거운 시간'을 의미합니다. 그 외에도 과학 견학을 가는 날이나 운동회 등을 뜻하기도 합니다.

A:This is pretty good.
B:What is pretty good? Is there any good news in the paper these days?
A:The export market is having a field-day, it says.
B:Glad to hear that. What's the problem with the domestic economy then?
A:It seems to have almost hit the bottom. Won't it get better?
B:I hope so. I didn't know the economy counts this much before.

A:이거 꽤 좋은데.
B:뭐가 좋아? 요즘 신문에 좋은 소식도 다 있어?
A:수출시장이 호황을 누리고 있대.
B:반가운 일이네. 그렇다면 내수 경제는 뭐가 문제인 거야?
A:이제 거의 바닥을 친 것 같은데. 좋아지지 않겠어?
B:그래야 할 텐데. 경제가 이렇게 중요한지 전에는 몰랐어.

Hold the field:우세하다, 압도적이다.
(예)His psychology theory has held the field for years. (그의 심리학 이론은 수년째 가장 지배적이다.)
